In it were broken jars containing scrolls of leather wrapped in linen cloth, inscribed in a strange writing. Soon recognized as "the greatest manuscript discovery of modern times," the chance finding of the Dead Sea Scrolls touched off furious controversy among Bible scholars and fascinated the public. Dr. Millar Burrows played a leading role in the first efforts to establish the authenticity and meaning of these documents. In The Dead Sea Scrolls he tells the entire story of the discoveries, of the attempts to date the manuscripts, of their content and their significance. His book is intended primarily for the interested lay reader whose imagination has been fired by these great finds, but those with some background in Biblical history will find it informative as well. Dr. Burrows brought to his task knowledge gained during a distinguished career as a professor of Near Eastern languages and literatures, and through an intimate association with the Dead Sea Scrolls from the time they came to light. Here were the earliest manuscript copy yet known of the book of Isaiah; the "Manual of Discipline" of an ancient religious order; a scroll recognized, despite severe damage, as the lost book of Lamech; a commentary on the book of Habakkuk; a manuscript recounting "The War of the Sons of Light with the Sons of Darkness"; a collection of "Thanksgiving Psalms"; and numerous fragments of other writings. Subsequently, manuscripts were found in other caves, all of them near the site of an ancient ruin called Khirbet Qumran. Who were the people of Khirbet Qumran? A group of very early Christians? An orthodox sect of pre~Christian Jews? A community of Essenes? Gnostics? When were the manuscripts written and stored in the caves? What is their significance to Biblical history and criticism? In addition to illuminating these difficult questions, Dr. Burrows enriched his book with his own translations~several being the earliest to appear in English~of the most interesting scrolls.
