THE DEATH OF ABEL IN FIVE BOOKS by Solomon Gessner, translated from the German by Mary Collyer. Published in London in 1810 by C. Cook. Hardcover, full leather, 24mo format. Weighs 4.5 ounces and is 5.5? tall. The book is in very good condition. Edges and corners of boards are rubbed, and there?s a short crack to the top of the rear joint, although binding is sound. Pastedowns and endpapers are marbled. Frontispiece portrait of Gessner is present. Text block is tight. There are no bookplates, inscriptions, marginalia, or dampstain. Pages 73-96 are toned. The Death of Abel is a poetic reimagining of the biblical story of Cain and Abel. It explores the themes of innocence, temptation, and the consequences of sin, visiting the tragic events surrounding Abel's death and Cain's subsequent remorse. Salomon Gessner (1730 - 1788) was a Swiss writer, translator, painter, and etcher. He ran an important publishing house, from which he published his books with his own excellent etchings.
