Item description from seller

A DAILY GUIDE FOR THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR MOVEMENT. Founded in 1881 by Rev. Francis E. Clark, the Christian Endeavor movement became one of the most influential Protestant youth and lay organizations of the late nineteenth century. This volume reflects the movement's emphasis on personal devotion, prayer meetings, moral development, and active Christian fellowship through daily readings and inspirational selections. Arranged in calendar form, the work combines scripture passages, poetry, religious quotations, and reflections designed for individual meditation and communal religious life. THE ART OF THE VICTORIAN GIFT BOOK. Beyond its devotional purpose, this volume reflects the Victorian tradition of transforming religious works into carefully designed presentation objects. The refined decorative binding, original publisher's gift box, and illustrated format demonstrate the period's emphasis on combining spiritual reflection with beauty and craftsmanship. The volume's Art Nouveau-inspired ornament and elegant presentation place it within the broader tradition of late nineteenth-century gift books, where books were created not only to be read but also treasured as personal possessions. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Octavo, 7.5 inches tall. Bound in light green buckram over boards, stamped in gilt and dark green with decorative floral ornament. Gilt spine and cover titles. Housed in the original decorated publisher's gift box. x, [2], 2-373 pages, including index. Illustrated with 12 plates, including frontispiece after Thorwaldsen. Devotional entries arranged in calendar form with ruled spaces for recording birthdays. CONDITION: Near Fine. Minimal handling wear to the book itself, which remains unusually well preserved. Buckram bright and fresh with gilt still attractive. Publisher's gift box remains solid and presentable with light handling wear, two split/open corners, and two small spots to the front panel. Retains the issued glassiline dust jacket. A notably superior survival for a boxed devotional volume of this period. SCARCITY NOTE: OCLC/WorldCat records approximately 13 institutional holdings. The title appears infrequently in the trade, particularly in the original publisher's gift box. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - THE DEVOTIONAL CULTURE OF VICTORIAN CHRISTIANITY This volume represents the intersection of religious practice, youth organization, and Victorian gift-book culture. Through the Christian Endeavor movement, Francis E. Clark helped shape a new model of Protestant participation centered on personal faith, organized fellowship, and active service. The attractive Art Nouveau binding and original presentation box demonstrate the period's belief that devotional works could be both spiritually meaningful and aesthetically refined, transforming a daily reading volume into a treasured personal object. SUBJECTS: Poetry, Art Nouveau Design, Gift Books, Decorative Bindings, Christian Endeavor movement, Francis E. Clark, devotional literature, Art Nouveau binding, Protestant devotional, boxed gift book, Victorian religion, daily meditation, religious gift editions, late 19th century Christianity, decorative religious bindings, Christian youth movements, Thorwaldsen frontispiece, devotional calendar book.
