The first London edition of David Deuchar's etched reproduction of 'The Dances of Death' - Hans Holbein's Renaissance satire - shown here through forty-six striking copper plates. The first London David Deuchar edition of Hans Holbein the Younger's The Dance of Death.First published in Edinburgh in 1788, publisher unknown.A striking series of Renaissance woodblock prints depicting the presence of Death on the everyday lives across various levels of society - from pope to physician to ploughman - and a refashioning of the late-medieval allegory of the Danse Macabre. In a modern half crushed morocco binding, with marbled boards and renewed endpapers. Exhibited in forty-six copper plates and an engraved title, etched by David Deuchar, done from the original designs.Collated, complete. To which are prefixed descriptions of each plate in French and English, with the scripture text from which the designs were taken. In a modern half crushed morocco binding, with marbled boards and renewed endpapers. Externally, very smart indeed, with really only a few spots to the rear joint leather. Pages with occasional handling marks and scattered spots. Tide mark to the corners of the first and last few leaves. Neat archival repair to the etched title page to the margin. Archival repair to final plate, less inconspicuous than the first but for the most part not affecting the illustration itself. Very Good Indeed. N° de réf. du vendeur 1005Y40
