Synopsis :
Database Management Systems (DBMS), based on the introductory database course at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and class-tested at over 20 universities, is a must for any course in databases or file organizations. DBMS provides a hands-on approach to relational database systems, with an emphasis on practical topics such as indexing methods, SQL' and database design. This book also provides up-to-date coverage of advanced topics (including active, deductive, and object databases; parallel and distributed systems; and decision support) and can be used in a second database course. DBMS has an example-driven presentation style that motivates new concepts and is easy to read. The quantitative approach helps students to evaluate alternatives, and is reinforced through a very extensive collection of exercises. Features of DBMS include the following: • A comprehensive treatment of file organizations and implementation topics. • Thorough discussion of SQL based on the SQL-92 standard. • Covers all aspects of database design, and explains the relationship of conceptual design (using the ER model), normalization, and physical design. • Emphasis on widely used concepts and techniques. • Accompanying software (Minibase), and assignments based on it. DBMS has its own website at http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~dbbook. Lecture slides, exercise solutions, and Minibase can be obtained from this site.
