A propos de cet article

4to. 149 unnumbered ll, lacking final blank. Roman letter. T-p and last verso with woodcut arms of author, Maurice, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (1572-1632), former reversed, tear from lower inner corner of last with loss of a few letters. Woodcut initial, typographic ornament. Light waterstain to blank outer margin at start, not affecting t-p, waterstaining to blank outer margin and lower corner at end, just touching text. Occasional very light foxing and spotting, a very good copy in original dedication binding of elaborately pierced German vellum over red silk, gilt (now oxidised), possibly by Hans Bapest von Erfurt, acorn, crescent, flower, and star motifs, elaborate roll tool borders, upper board with armorial supralibros of Maurice of Hesse-Kassel, reversed, border inscription, lower board with central floral motif, spine in panels, floriated and roll tools, edges gilt, gauffered with floral motifs, remains of green silk ties, a few small areas of vellum lightly rubbed, in excellent condition. Contemp. 4-line inscription to t-p by French Calvinist theologian Daniel Tossanus (1541-1602), 'Hic liber ad me missus est Marpurgo jussu ill[ustrisi]mi Principis Mauricii Landgravi à M. Joh[annes]. Hartmanno Mathemat[ic]u[m] p[ro]fessore Anno 1595 die 22 April’, i.e. Johannes Hartmann (1568-1631), fly with 8-line gift inscription from Tossanus to his son-in-law, Theodore Haak Sr., and grandson Friedrich, in memory of Maurice: ‘Hunc librum illustrem in recordationem Laudatissimam Principis Landgravii MAURICII dono dedi genero meo D. Theodoro Hackio: et eius filio suavissimo FRIDERICO, mio ex filia primogenital nepoti 24 April 1595, Daniel Tossanus.’ C19 bibliographical inscription to fly of Adolf von Savigny, C18 bookplate of Cristian Carl Ludwig von Savigny (1726-91) to front pastedown. In folding box. Fourth edition, first published 1589, of this very scarce translation of the Psalms into Latin verse by Maurice, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassell, a presentation copy from the author to Daniel Tossanus, with the German polymath Johannes Hartmann, professor of mathematics at the University of Marburg acting as intermediary, Tossanus gave the book in honour of Maurice to his son-in-law Theodore Haak and grandson Friedrich, in an exceptional commemorative binding of pierced vellum over red silk, with Maurice’s arms at centre. Psalm translation and metrical paraphrase were central traditions of Protestant worship during the C16th. Maurice’s Psalms are preceded by a Latin laudatory poem to his father, the Lutheran stalwart William IV, also called William the Wise, with a two-line chronogram containing the date of composition, 1589, which was Maurice’s eighteenth year. The Latin Psalms appear in a wide variety of meters, some quite unusual, such as Psalms 97 and 120, in which every line contains only five syllables. Maurice of Hesse-Kassell, also known as Maurice the Learned, was intensely interested in academic pursuits, so the presentation of his own Latin verses to one noted academic, with another acting as intermediary, makes perfect sense. The University of Marburg, where the mathematician and chemist Johann Hartmann was professor, was the academic jewel in the Hesse-Kassel crown, having been founded by Maurice’s ancestor Philip I in 1527. The religious dimension of the Calvinist Tossanus’s gift to his descendants in honour of Maurice is also unsurprising. Maurice inherited the landgraviate in 1592, immediately becoming a target for both Calvinist and Lutheran proselytisers, as he gradually moved towards a personal conversion to Calvinism, officially declared in 1605, upon which this became the official state religion of the landgraviate.
