On August 15, 1971, Richard Nixon made an announcement that changed the international monetary system—and altered America's relationship with the financial world.
For decades, the United States had stood at the center of the Bretton Woods system. The dollar was tied to gold, while currencies around the world were linked to the dollar. That arrangement had helped shape the postwar global economy and placed American monetary power at its center.
Then Nixon closed the gold window.
The Day Nixon Broke America’s Promise to the World takes readers inside one of the most consequential economic decisions of the twentieth century, examining what happened before Nixon's announcement, why his administration believed drastic action was necessary, and how the decision transformed the monetary order that had governed the postwar world.
At the heart of the story is the Nixon Shock: the suspension of the dollar's convertibility into gold, accompanied by a 90-day freeze on wages and prices and a temporary import surcharge. The measures were presented as a bold response to inflation, unemployment, balance-of-payments pressures, and attacks on the dollar. But their consequences reached far beyond America's domestic economy. :contentReference[oaicite:2]{index=2}
This book explores:
- How the Bretton Woods monetary system worked and why the dollar occupied such a powerful position within it
- Why mounting economic pressures placed the dollar under increasing strain
- What happened during the secret Camp David meetings that preceded Nixon's announcement
- Why Nixon decided to suspend the dollar's convertibility into gold
- How America's allies reacted to the sudden change in U.S. monetary policy
- The connection between the dollar, international trade, inflation, and American economic power
- The Smithsonian Agreement and the unsuccessful effort to preserve a revised fixed-exchange-rate system
- How the collapse of Bretton Woods helped usher in a new era of floating exchange rates
- What the Nixon Shock reveals about presidential power, economic nationalism, and America's role in the global financial system
Beyond the headlines, this is a story about trust: trust in a currency, trust between nations, and trust in the promises underpinning an international economic order.
Nixon's decision was not simply an isolated monetary announcement. It was part of a much larger transformation taking place in American foreign policy and domestic politics during the final years of the Vietnam era. The same presidency that was reshaping relations with China and the Soviet Union was also confronting inflation, international monetary instability, and America's changing position in the world. :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}
The Day Nixon Broke America’s Promise to the World offers a compelling historical examination of the moment when an established monetary order began to crack—and of the economic and geopolitical consequences that followed.
For readers interested in Richard Nixon, the Nixon Shock, Bretton Woods, the history of the U.S. dollar, gold, monetary policy, American economic history, and the evolution of the global financial system, this book provides an accessible journey into a decision whose consequences continue to shape the modern world.
