Uncorrected proof of the author's seventh book, "often considered one of the finest among his earlier works" (Collings, p. 94). Although the "Advance Reading Copy" for the later New American Library is frequently encountered, this volume of "unrevised and unpublished proofs" is not common. This volume is accompanied by a photocopied sheet of blurb from the publishers. Both this and the front wrapper state publication on 16 August 1979.
