A propos de cet article

32 lines in black ink first 3 sides of 4pp, 16mo, with integral blank. Retaining orig. stamped & post-marked envelope. A very nice letter from the celebrated Irish painter and illustrator to Marion Ely, 1820-1913, friend of Dickens and niece of Thomas Noon Talfourd. The letter forms an explanation for his lack of availability, outlining obligations to the Royal Academy. 'I am called from home twice a week in the heart of these short days - and I am forced to attend the school from six to 8 every evening!!! during this month astounding as the fact must appear to you'. Despite his overloaded schedule, he hopes to be in attendance at Mrs Simpson's 'in the evening of Thursday next'. Maclise assures Miss Ely, 'I hope soon to have a picture forward enough, to give a little interest to your morning call'. The picture in question is not further identified; Maclise is known to have sketched Miss Ely in the early 1840s, and perhaps this is the drawing referred to. WITH: A second short letter from Maclise, to 'My Dear Mrs Talfourd', from 4 Russell Place, Friday. 'I have my long accustomed amount of satisfaction in accepting your kind invitation for Saturday the 10th'. 11 lines in black ink first side only of 4pp, 16mo, with integral blanks; lightly folded for posting.
