Item description from seller

London: for Edward Husbands and John Franke, 1642. "Joyn with the Parliament to Suppresse this Popish Army" [Great Britain]. [English Civil War]. A Declaration of the Lords and Commons Assembled in Parliament. In Answer to His Majesties Declaration, Intituled His Majesties Declaration to All His Loving Subjects, After His Late Victory Against the Rebels, On Sunday the 23 of October, 1642. Together, With a Catalogue of the Names of Divers of the Colonels, Lieutenant-Colonells, Serjeant Majors, Captains, And Lieutenants, That are Papists and Commanders in the Army, Under the Command of the Earl of Newcastle. London: Printed for Edward Husbands, and John Franke, 1642. 12, [1] pp. Quarto (9" x 6-3/4"; 23 x 17 cm). Stab-stitched pamphlet bound in nineteenth-century three-quarter cloth over marbled boards, gilt title to spine, edges untrimmed. Rubbing, light soiling, minor bubbling to cloth, light wear to extremities, spine ends and corners bumped, owner bookplate (Fairfax of Cameron) to front pastedown along with ink manuscript shelfmarks and later bookseller description. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, light soiling to margins, title page re-hinged with tissue. $1,250. * Only edition. This pamphlet was issued by Parliament in response to Charles I's declaration of victory after the Battle of Edgehill on October 23, 1642. (In reality, neither side attained a decisive victory, and the First English Civil War would drag on for another four years.) It responds to accusations that the Earl of Essex was harboring Catholics in the Parliamentarian army by accusing the Earl of Newcastle of harboring Catholics in the Royalist army. Our copy was owned by a member of the Fairfax of Cameron family, which had a large and important private library particularly strong in material from the English Civil Wars; Lord Thomas Fairfax [1584-1648] and Sir Thomas Fairfax [1612-1671] were both of the Fairfax of Cameron line and held important commanding positions in the Parliamentarian army. This copy is an item from the 1993 Sotheby's sale of the Fairfax Library and Archive The Property of the Lord and Lady Fairfax. English Short-Title Catalogue R212569.
