A propos de cet article

Limited edition, number 242 of 365 copies (only 350 of which were for sale). Originally published in 1772, the novel is an occult romance in which a demon falls in love with a Spanish nobleman, and assumes the guise of a young woman to woo him. According to Pierre-Georges Castex, the work was "the very initiator of the modern fantasy story" (Rottensteiner, The Fantasy Book, p. 137). The present edition contains plates by Jean Émile Laboureur, an engraver, lithographer, watercolorist, and book illustrator. Originally greatly influenced by Gauguin, he became a cubist artist. He learned the art of engraving from Auguste-Louis Lepère, and later learned lithography from Toulouse-Lautrec. He illustrated sixty-six titles, including works by Colette, Marcel Proust, Anna de Noailles, and Remy de Gourmont, among others. Rarely found with the glassine dustjacket and slipcase. 8vo. Black cloth over marbled boards, spine with printed paper label, fore-edge uncut, in the original glassine dustjacket. x, 87, [1] pp. 8 7/8 x 5 1/2 in. Title-page vignette and six engraved plates by J.E. Laboureur. In the original slipcase with paper label. Very good; glassine worn and chipped, slipcase a bit worn and with minor splits at top and bottom, but volume itself in excellent condition.…
