A propos de cet article

112 ff on fine parchment, with later hand numbering. 64 for the first part and 65-112 for the second. Leaf size 10.8 x 7.2 cm; written area 6.5 x 4.2 cm. 21 lines. Faint traces of red ruling. Written in black-brown ink in a regular *Bastarda* script. Rubricated throughout; highlighting in red; Lombardic initials and versals in blue and red. Features 2 large two-colored initials (10 and 8 lines high, one with a floral marginal stem), 17 initials of four to five lines, and 37 initials of two to three lines, all with rich fleuronnee decoration in mauve, red, and blue. Bound in reused parchment manuscript leaf over boards. This is a lovely late medieval manuscript prayer and meditation book, complete, on parchment, handsomely written and rubricated throughout, with a number of fine large initials, of the Devotio Moderna (Modern Devotion), the major spiritual reform movement within the late medieval Church which sought a return to a humble mode of life in imitation of Christ. The Devotio Moderna met with an enthusiastic reception particularly in the Netherlands and Northern Germany, and was a major influence on such notables as Erasmus and indeed on the later Reformation and Counter-Reformation. As such, this MS is a potent and beautiful artifact of one of the most important religious movements in late medieval Europe, ultimately with major historical ramifications. The manuscript is complete,112 parchment leaves, probably dating from the mid 1400s, and most likely from the Lower Rhine, probably the Cologne area, likely created in a convent for the Brothers for a Common Life (Fratres Vitae Communis) who, in keeping with their Devotio Moderna beliefs, sustained themselves in strictly asceitic communities by such acitivites as manuscript copying. (We note a reference to Cologne on an antiphon on fol. 103v: "O felix Germania tam decoro germine virginum ornata. Beata Colonia percicoso sanguine martyrum ditata." A rhyming prayer to St. Cornelius (fol. 99r) "O Corneli martyr Christi | Papa sanctus qui fuisti | hic in terris deo gratus | nunc in celo sublimatus ." also points to Cologne, where St. Cornelius is co-patron of the church of St. Severin alongside Cyprian, and a corresponding relic, the "Cornelius Horn," is located.)The MS begins with a large 10-line initial "S," divided in two colors and filled with floral featherwork. The expansive fleuronee encloses three pages of the type area; the fourth page is closed off by a wide, florally designed border. The 8-line initial "S" (fol. 65) is similarly designed, but without the marginal bar. All other smaller initials are filled with featherwork or a floral depiction and are decorated with extensive fleuronee, often encompassing two pages of the type area and extending beyond it.The text is divided into two parts. It begins with the meditation section (fol. 1-64r; 64v blank), primarily on the Passion of Christ."Incipit deuotu(m) excercitiu(m) c(ir)ca vitam passione(m) (et) g(lori)ficat(i)o(n)e(m) Ih(es)u (Christ)i. Si desideras perfecte mu(n)dari a viciis si nobiliter ditari in v(ir)tutib(us) si altissime illu(mi)nare in scripturis." The meditations are distributed over the seven days of the week and set at different times of the day, mostly spiritual excercises in keeping with those of the Devotio. There are various marginal glosses, mostly in the first half of the manuscript, added in red by the scribe, citing sources such as Anselm of Canterbury, Bernard of Clairvaux, Bonaventure, Ludolf of Saxony, and also the Revelationes Brigidae. The prayer part follows (fol. 65r-112v). "De seq(ui)ti or(ati)o(n)e fertur (ad) b(ea)t(u)s b(er)n(ar)d(us) ." with a rhyming office: "Salve meu(m) salutare | salve salve Ih(es)u care .", wrongly (but commonly) attributed to Saint Bernard. (fertur per b(ea)t(u)m B(er)n(ar)d(u)m). This Salve meum (mundi) salutare is particularly interesting; it preserves the original Salve meum rather than the Salve mundi, in keeping with the intensely personal aspects of Dev.…
