4 volumes, 4to. Typescript, cloth bound, the last two volumes damp stained to the covers; and 2 volumes small 8vo. Manuscript in notebooks, in original calf and sheep. The first volume of the Diary with a silhouette of Sarah Fox. "This likeness of Sarah Fox, taken later in her life, was given me by Sarah Champion Bowden, nà e Prince, whose father John Prince is frequently referred to by Sarah Cox, and who was named after her. J.F." A fascinating collection comprising of typescripts of a selection of Sarah Fox's journals and letters undertaken by John Frank c. 1872, this copy produced for Elizabeth Pumphrey, probably by E.T. Wedmore whose name appears on the title pages. With the original manuscript diary for the last years of Sarah Fox's life and a copy of her brother's address to his children with Sarah's epitaph. With the ownership initials of F.L. Rawlins, and an ALs from E.T. Wedmore to Rawlins inserted offering to loan the volumes, which eventually came into his possession. A manuscript note to the end paper of the first volume refers to ownership of the final manuscript volume by F.L.R[awlins]. Sarah Fox's journals were contained in over 40 manuscript volumes, which were rumoured to be still in existence in the early 20th century, but whose whereabouts are currently unknown. In 1872, they were in the ownership of Rachel Elizabeth Debell Tuckett [nà e Fox] of Yeldhall [or Yeldall] Manor. She was the widow of Philip Debell Tuckett, whose father, also Philip Debell Tuckett was married to Sarah's sister Esther [Hetty]. As Sarah died without children, the provenance here is understandable. E.T. Wedmore was a contemporary Quaker historian who published articles in the Journal of the Friends' Historical Society. The bulk of the diaries here transcribed, consisting of the first 3 and a half volumes, are known by copies at Woodbrooke College and the Friends House Library; this copy previously unknown. The transcriptions were published by the Bristol Record Society in 2003; a copy of this modern edition is also included here. The selection of letters is, as far as is known, the only example in existence, although earlier letters can be found in the Bristol Record Office in the Champion Collection of correspondence. The final manuscript diary seems to have been unknown, or at least unused, by John Frank when he was transcribing his selections and in fact, even Sarah considered her journals complete prior to starting this one: "Tho my journal is concluded I am desirous of still preserving a record of some events as a help to my memory." She continues for a further 116 pages, from 1803, her final entry being in December 1810; she died in November the following year. F.L. Rawlins has written two pages of notes following the diary, as well as a comprehensive name index recording meetings and visits including Thomas Clarkson, abolitionist, and Hannah More, religious writer, philanthropist and abolitionist. This diary unpublished. The additional notebook is her brother's moving and loving address to his children on the death of their mother, and Sarah's own notes "The writer of the foregoing survived the much loved object of his affections eleven months and fourteen days leaving seven amiable children to deplore the loss of an affectionate Father." With a final "Epitaph sacred to the memory of Judith Champion the beloved wife of Richard Champion" by Sarah.…
