No date, circa 1860s. 4 3/4" x 7." 424 pages, complete. Eight additional pages of advertisements in back promoting other titles for "young persons." Former owner's gift inscription in black ink on front free endpaper: "Presented to--Mastr. G. Duke. Prize for Arithmetic, and English Gramr., Ratcliffe Academy, Xmas 1863." Page are clean and intact except for light age toning, former owner's gift inscription, and light to moderate darkening limited to edges of text block. Covers are clean and intact overall but have light to moderate darkening and soiling, light rubbing, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. A compilation of histories about the travels of Christopher Columbus and other European explorers to and in the Americas. Edited by Henry P. Dunster. Dunster's compilation begins with Columbus's four voyages to the Americas. Brief biographies about other explorers such as Ponce de Leon, Diego Velasquez, and Francis Hernandez are included. The book proceeds to describe the explorations of British explorers to the Americas. Some of the British explorers discussed are John Cabot, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Walter Raleigh, Charles Leigh, Robert Harcourt, Captain Keymis, Captain Newport, John Robinson, Hudson, and Leonard Calvert. Also included are a concise sketch of the formation of the Hudson's Bay Company, accounts of interactions between European explorers and Indigenous Peoples, and descriptions of the numerous English settlements established in North America.…
