Paperback. Four dragons are called to a high country the world made by itself - and none of them are kings.Tiamat reads ice. Fafnir carries fire that chooses when to burn. Vritra listens to water. Nidhogg points like a root finding its way downhill. Each has a voice. None of them yet know that the land needs all four at once, or that singing a country into being is only the beginning of keeping it alive.Something is already emptying the wild places nearby and leaving only the shell behind. When the fifth voice is finally heard - small, unplanned, born from the chord the four of them make together - it becomes clear that this new land will need more than four guardians to survive what's coming for it.The Dragons of the Enchantments is the shorter, younger-reader telling of the story first told in The Fifth Voice: The Enchantments' Call - the same high country, the same four dragons and the fifth no one expected, paced and told for readers meeting this world for the first time. This is an origin story about power that shows up to tend a place, not to sit on it. It's about neighbors who don't look alike - trolls and elves, phoenixes and dragons, brownies and pixies - learning to trust each other before they've earned it. It's about what every creature in a new land owes the ground none of them built alone. And it's about a night when the lights are stolen from the trees themselves, and four careful guardians discover that watching a country is not the same as keeping it safe.Readers of The Fifth Voice will recognize every name in these pages. Readers meeting the Enchantments for the first time will find this the easiest door in: shorter chapters, a clearer line from danger to danger, and the same four dragons discovering, one hard lesson at a time, what they actually signed up for when they answered the call.If you've hiked the Enchantments - or any wild place that asked more of you than a photograph - you already know the job this book is about.Bruce Stevenson writes the Enchantments series from a lifetime of turning family hikes into stories: an afternoon in the San Juan Islands that started down the dragon path, and years of trail miles since that kept adding reasons why the land is the way it is. The Dragons of the Enchantments is the first companion volume in that series, and the place most new readers - young or otherwise - are invited to start. Four dragons are called to a land the world made itself, not to rule it. A fifth voice no one expected may be the only thing that can keep it safe. The younger-reader companion to The Fifth Voice. Four dragons are called to a high country the world made by itself - and none of them are kings.
Tiamat reads ice. Fafnir carries fire that chooses when to burn. Vritra listens to water. Nidhogg points like a root finding its way downhill. Each has a voice. None of them yet know that the land needs all four at once, or that singing a country into being is only the beginning of keeping it alive.
Something is already emptying the wild places nearby and leaving only the shell behind. When the fifth voice is finally heard - small, unplanned, born from the chord the four of them make together - it becomes clear that this new land will need more than four guardians to survive what's coming for it.
The Dragons of the Enchantments is the shorter, younger-reader telling of the story first told in The Fifth Voice: The Enchantments' Call - the same high country, the same four dragons and the fifth no one expected, paced and told for readers meeting this world for the first time.
And it's about a night when the lights are stolen from the trees themselves, and four careful guardians discover that watching a country is not the same as keeping it safe.
Readers of The Fifth Voice will recognize every name in these pages. Readers meeting the Enchantments for the first time will find this the easiest door in: shorter chapters, a clearer line from danger to danger, and the same four dragons discovering, one hard lesson at a time, what they actually signed up for when they answered the call.
If you've hiked the Enchantments - or any wild place that asked more of you than a photograph - you already know the job this book is about.
