She was born in secret, nearly aborted, abandoned to an orphanage, and raised by German nuns in the mountains of Tanzania.

Decades later, Maria Nhambu has built a life in America: a husband, two children, a dance program celebrated across three continents. But the one question she has never been able to answer follows her everywhere: Who is my father?

In this stunning conclusion to the Dancing Soul Trilogy, Maria and her half-brother Larry travel to rural Tanzania on what feels like an impossible search. What they find in the village of Kasamwa will bring them, and you, to tears.

But the search for her father is only one of the storms she must survive. In the space of two years, Maria endures a devastating divorce after thirty-five years of marriage, a diagnosis of breast cancer, and a hurricane that nearly destroys her home. Through it all, she is guided by Fat Mary, her fierce, luminous inner voice, present since childhood, the part of her that has always known she would not break.

Maria Nhambu's story is not just a memoir. It is a testament to what it means to be fully, bravely alive: to carry Africa in your soul while building a life in America; to love a man who betrayed you and forgive him anyway; to survive every storm the world sends and emerge dancing.

Drum Beats, Heart Beats is the triumphant final chapter of one of the most extraordinary lives ever put to page.

Perfect for readers who loved Educated by Tara Westover, Becoming by Michelle Obama, and West with the Night by Beryl Markham.

Maria Nhambu was born in Tanzania, East Africa, and raised in an orphanage for biracial children. Her passion for African dance, art, and culture inspired her to create the popular workout Aerobics With Soul®, and teach African Studies in America. She has made sharing her love of Africa and its culture and rhythms the focus of her life. In that role she gives African dance presentations and speaks about Africa to groups across the U.S. and around the world.
