A propos de cet article

“EGGS-A-COOK” — The Story of the Forty-Fourth Captain C. Longmore — Limited Edition of 250 Copies A scarce Australian First World War battalion history and an especially desirable title for collectors of Australian Imperial Force unit histories. “Eggs-A-Cook”: The Story of the Forty-Fourth — War as the Digger Saw It by Captain C. Longmore records the wartime story of the 44th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, one of Western Australia’s notable AIF battalions of the Great War. The original work was published in Perth in 1921 by The Colortype Press Limited, St George’s Court, and was dedicated: “To Comrades Still ‘Over There’.” This copy is the later limited-edition reprint, restricted to only 250 copies, making it collectible in its own right and an accessible alternative to the exceptionally scarce original 1921 edition. Particularly interesting provenance This example bears the ownership/library stamps of the Victorian Branch Library, ANZAC House, giving it an additional connection with Australia's veteran and military-history community. These markings should be clearly disclosed as part of the book's history rather than treated simply as defects. The book is attractively bound in dark green cloth with gilt lettering, including the full title, The Story of the Forty-Fourth, and Captain Longmore's name to the spine. The 44th Battalion was raised in Western Australia in 1916 and served with the 11th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division on the Western Front. As a contemporary battalion narrative written by one of its officers, Longmore's history is an important source for the experiences and character of the Australian soldiers who served with the unit. Condition: Very good overall for a military-history reference volume. The green cloth remains strong and the gilt lettering is bright. There is some expected minor handling/storage wear. Former library markings and handwritten catalogue/price notations are present internally, as shown in the photographs. Collector appeal: A scarce 250-copy limited edition, important Western Australian AIF battalion history, attractive gilt cloth binding, and an interesting ANZAC House / Victorian Branch Library provenance.…
