A propos de cet article

1868-1871. The first two books are first editions, the final book is a second edition. Mixed conditions. Book 1, dated 1868, contains volumes 1 & 2. Green cloth with title label to spine now worn and with I-II inked in to the centre of the label. Boards rather spotted and marked, corners worn with rear upper exposed. Spine sunned and with nicks to head and tail. Contemporary bookplate for Sidney Williams to front pastedown. Contemporary gift inscription to half-title. Binding a little loose. Some page creasing from handling. Contents: An Apology, Prologue, 'Author to Reader', March-August. To the rear, an 'in preparation page' for the follow up volume: originally planned as the concluding volume, followed by a single leaf of Ellis adverts. Book 2, dated 1870, contains volume 3. Binding very weak with front in hinge split and being held by two cords (one of which is fraying). Boards spotted and marked. Spine with small splits to head. Label stained. Contemporary bookplate of 'Edmund Sidney Williams' to front pastedown, associated gift inscription to half-title. Two page advert for William Morris's works before half-title. Text less creased than volume one. Contents: September-November. Book 3, dated 1871, contains volume 4. Second edition as stated to the title page. Covers slightly marked. Label discoloured. Corners bumped. Binding firm. Bookplate for Sidney Williams to front pastedown. Contemporary ownership signature to half-title dated December 23rd 1870. Text with only light wear. Contents: December-February, Epilogue, L'Envoi. Binder's label to rear pastedown ( Burn & Co). To the rear is a tipped-in replacement label for book one with the I&II in its centre (now rarely seen), preceded by a title page example for book one and followed by 8pp of Ellis adverts (including Rossetti and Morris works). Gradings: book 1, good; book 2, fair; book 3, very good. Further details available on request. Due to weight, significant extra postage will be required for delivery outside the U.K. (NOTE: on the internet there is a very interesting account of the owner's life and the books appear to date from around the time of his second marriage with inscriptions to her, pre and post marriage).
