One of 250 (261 actually) numbered and signed copies. The work of original lithographed word Flux images in rainbow colours throughout the leporello book, contained in the famous Spiegel edition MAT-MOT 2-inch-thick, black, square, box. The printed label affixed to box spine, within which (at same place on inner spine) the letterpress label colophon, "dieses exemplar trägt die nummer 18", then "signature" and in thick black ink Emmett Williams’s signature. Classy production by Spoerri and gang. MAT-MOT boxes are almost impossible to find for some reason. The idea for them stemmed from Spoerri’s prior Editions MAT wherewith he travelled around Europe with multiple artworks by Duchamp, Tinguely and others contained in a hat – Spoerri an inventive guy. He then had an EAT art gallery for a while, and moved to Symi in Greece (see "SPOERRI, DANIEL, 25 Objects de magie à la noix"). Spoerri, né Rosenstiel, was a Rumanian adopted in Zürich by Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Spoerri, the man with five doctorates who was Rector of Zürich University. As a kid Daniel wanted to become a tapdancer (as did Warhol), then a dancer. Then he made those wonderful post-surreal falling table artworks of meals with friends, all covered in glue/glaze and hung horizontally – remains of dinner, fag-ends, bits of lamb chop, tablecloth, beercaps, etc. And, of course, the Anecdoted Typography of Chance, which documented it all, in great detail with more footnotes than "text propre". "Shalake came over. We couldn’t find a key. He banged open the lock, sat down and had some smokes and a beer. Then Ann went to the other room to get some bread." That kind of footnote wonderful. On the other hand, Dr. Theophilius Spoerri, his dad, not only was the many doctored Rector of Zürich, but his name appears on the cover of Niklaus Gessner’s Ph.D., the wondrous first separate publication on Beckett’s work anywhere, or one of the first, certainly the first Ph.D. on the subject, which he oversaw (see "BECKETT, SAMUEL: Niklaus Gessner" above).
