Item description from seller

An Interesting Perspective on Early-Modern England Lambard(e), William [1536-1601]. Eirenarcha, Or of the Office of the Iustices of Peace, In Foure Bookes. Whereunto be Adioyned, The Severall Offices of Church Ministers and Churchwardens, And Overseers for the Poore, Surveighours of the Highwaies, And Distributors of the Provision Against Noysome Fowle and Vermine. London: Printed for the Companie of Stationers, 1606. 80 pp. Octavo (6-1/4" x 4"). Eighteenth-century calf, blind rules and corner fleurons to boards, raised bands and lettering piece to spine. Light rubbing and a few minor stains to boards, moderate rubbing to board edges, corners bumped and somewhat worn, shallow creases to spine, chipping to spine ends, later armorial bookplate (Chapman-Purchas) to front pastedown, front hinge cracked, offsetting to margins of endleaves, front free endpaper detached. Moderate toning to interior, faint dampstaining to some leaves in first quarter of text, recent notes and underlining in faint pencil to a few leaves, light soiling, early owner initials and light edgewear to title page. $950. * Later editions. Lambard, or Lambarde, a barrister and legal historian, was the keeper of records at the Rolls Chapel and the Tower of London. First published in 1581, Eirenarcha is esteemed for its comprehensive and systematic account of local legal and political life. It was the standard authority for many years and often reprinted. Like many books of its kind, Eirenarcha offers fascinating insights into the society that produced it. This is evident in the detailed indictments for such offenses as murder via witchcraft, raping a child or maid (the age of distinction was ten), hearing a Catholic Mass, practicing usury and operating a bowling alley. A companion work first published in 1582, The Duties of Constables concerns the duties of other lay officers. Taken together, these books offer an interesting perspective on early-modern England. English Short-Title Ca.
