Gilt label on 2. , John Kersey the elder (1616 ? c.1690), a prominent seventeenth century English mathematician. He was a friend of Edmund Wingate, and edited the second edition of his ?Arithmetic? in 1650, and subsequent issues till 1683. He wrote ?The Elements of Mathematical Art?? in dedication to his pupils. After its publication it became a standard authority on mathematical teachings.
