Synopsis :

The Aberdares supports one of the largest elephant populations in Kenya; however, these are facing escalating human pressure. Indirect sampling methods were used to assess elephant densities, distribution, habitat utilization and the human activities affecting elephants in Southern Aberdare. Two thousand and fifty three elephants were estimated in the study area in a period of one year. Dung densities were highest in the moorland and lowest in the sub-montane zone in both dry and wet seasons. Elephants were evenly distributed and highly utilized the bamboo and moorland habitats throughout the year. Elephant dung decay rates differed significantly between the bamboo and sub-montane zones.Seasonality and human activities influenced habitat utilization. Elephants preferred the least disturbed bamboo and moorland zones. The bamboo zone was the most preferred habitat type irrespective of the season. Illegal human activities such as charcoal burning were found to be a threat to the integrity of southern Aberdare ecosystem for elephant and other wildlife conservation.
