Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873) was an English writer and politician, serving as a Whig member of Parliament from 1831-1841 and a Conservative member from 1851-1866. He was also Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1858-1859. He is famous for having coined the phrases "pursuit of the almighty dollar," "the pen is mightier than the sword," and "It was a dark and stormy night." Bulwer-Lytton published his first work in 1820, a collection of poems. He would go on to write in a variety of genres, and was able to support the life of a Victorian dandy through his prolific publications. His first major success was the novel Pelham (1829). This work was the origin of his reputation for witty remarks and the identification of the stereotypical English dandy. The town of Lytton, British Columbia, Canada, was named after him. Ernest Maltravers is considered to be a Gothic work, and is a philosophical meditation on love, morality, and society from the point of view of the protagonist, Ernest Maltravers, an artist who has set out in search of experiences for the purpose of artistic and intellectual experience. The narrative tracks Maltravers development through his experiences and the people he meets, interspersed with philosophical digressions. The work stands out for its moral complexity, as well as the development of its characters and reflections on moral questions. A particularly important relationship is that between Maltravers and Alice Darvil, whom he rescues from her wicked father, after which they fall in love. There is a sequel to this work called "Alice." In the preface to the 1840 edition, Bulwer-Lytton writes that this work is ".the most mature, and, on the whole, the mos comprehensive of all that I have hitherto written." He identifies Goethe's "Wilhem Meister" as an inspiration for the text, and calls the foundational idea of the work "the philosophical design of a moral education or apprenticeship.".…
