8vo, pp.viii, 389, [1]; occasional light foxing, but a very good copy, uncut in later pebbled cloth, upper side a little sunnedFirst edition of Condorcet's epoch-making definition of progress, the summation of the Enlightenment belief in man's perfectibility, the outline which provided humanity with a view of its own history as a narrative of progress and emancipation. Condorcet's three main propositions consist in his regard of the past as the unfolding of the progressive development of human capabilities; in his persuasion that progress in the natural sciences must be followed by progress in the moral and political sciences; that social evils are the avoidable products of ignorance, rather than inevitable consequences of features in human nature. Condorcet 'forecasts the destruction of inequality between nations and classes, and the improvement, intellectual, moral and physical, of human nature. Unlike Godwin, he does not preach absolute equality, but equality of opportunity' (PMM). Nouvelle Edition. Early publication of the important posthumous work by Condorcet (cf. PMM 246, first edition), appearing two years after the first edition. This issue is without a named publisher or place; this fact combined with the relatively cheap paper it is printed on suggests clandestine publication due to piracy or wanting to avoid the scrutiny of the French revolutionary government which Condorcet helped formed but under whose custody he ultimately perished. Portrait frontispiece of Condorcet. [iv], 294, [2] pp. Moderate binding wear. Bookplate removed; outer leaves foxing, light toning throughout. Very Good Period half marbled calf over marbled boards, raised bands, lettering piece, patterned endpapers. N° de réf. du vendeur 233
