A propos de cet article

Offering this unique 1929 facsimile reprint of Dr. William Beaumont’s seminal 1833 work, "Experiments and Observations on the Gastric Juice, and the Physiology of Digestion," and includes the famous introductory biographical essay, "A Pioneer American Physiologist," by Sir William Osler. Boston: Harvard University Press, 1929 for distribution at the landmark XIII International Physiological Congress in Boston - the first time the prestigious event was held in the Americas. Dark brown cloth over light brown paper boards, with original paper spine label and dust jacket, frontispiece portrait of William Beaumont, pp.280. Provenance & Association: This copy features the handwritten signatures (two) of Dr. Roberta Hafkesbring (1896-1986) inside the front cover. Dr. Hafkesbring was a pioneering 20th-century American research physiologist. In 1929, she was working in the Department of Physiology at Tulane University, making it highly probable that this was her personal copy received while attending the historic Boston Congress. She later went on to have a distinguished career as a professor of physiology at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, where her research focused heavily on gastric secretions and stomach chemistry. Overall condition is Very Good. Binding is secure and square, with sharp corners and not much wear. The jacket is fully intact with moderate wear: bumping to edges and small tears, a couple of stray marks, and the spine folds are splitting but holding (now in protective mylar). Text block edges have some age toning. Interior shows very little wear: inside hinges are uncompromised, and the pages are clean and unmarked, free of any creases or tears. An incredible, unique association copy perfect for collectors of medical history, institutional archives, or books tracking the history of women in STEM! [D2].…
