A propos de cet article

A beautifully bound pocket sized copy of Samuel Croxall's noted edition of Aesop's fables, bound in full diced calf, housed in a uniform chemise and slipcase, adorned with many wood engravings. A beautifully bound nineteenth century copy of Samuel Croxall's edition.Bound by Eric Sweet, a keen collector of private press and fables. He studied at the Brighton College of Art, before moving to London to work as a letteringartist and typographer for advertising agencies, later becoming the head ofBirmingham School of Printing. Sweet's bindings are unique and striking, reflecting the topics of the volumes in distinctivestyle.Illustrated with a facsimile of the original frontispiece, lacking the original, and one hundred monochrome vignette vignettes.A charming collection of fables credited to Aesop, a Greek storyteller and fabulist whose tales were characterised by the anthropomorphic animal characters. This edition was translated and written by Samuel Croxall, and is notable for its addition of his 'instructions' to the end of each fable, which taught the reader how to apply the lessons of the fables to every day life.Bound in modern full diced calf with a cloth chemise and matching slipcase. Endpapers and blanks renewed. Bound in modern full diced calf with a cloth chemise and matching slipcase. Endpapers and blanks renewed. Lacking the original frontispiece, renewed with a facsimile. Externally lovely. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages with the odd spot and minor handling mark, an owner's inscription to the verso of the title page, and a minor archival tape repair to pp. 224.
