First Edition. Volume two of two only. Modern calf, red leather spine label, gilt work to spine. The second volume of what is generally considered to be one of the most important works of American political thought. Despite lacking the first 36 essays found in volume one, this volume does includes several important pieces by each of the three founding fathers. In Federalist No. 84, Hamilton makes the case that there is no need to amend the Constitution by adding a Bill of Rights, insisting that the various provisions in the proposed Constitution protecting liberty amount to a bill of rights. Federalist No. 78, also written by Hamilton, lays the groundwork for the doctrine of judicial review by federal courts of federal legislation or executive acts. Federalist No. 70 presents Hamilton's case for a one-man chief executive. In Federalist No. 39, Madison presents the clearest exposition of what has come to be called Federalism. An attractive copy, despite imperfections. The title page (1 leaf), the contents pages (2 leaves) and pages 3/4 (1 leaf) are in facsimile, page 5/6 has had its margins enlarged, Article pages at rear are cut with smaller margins and worming damage to these Article pages have been professionally repaired.
