Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Paperback edition, published by University of California Press. First published in 1932, this copy is the paperback reprint, a later printing. A classic on film theory. Collection of essays mostly from the 1930's, with the added 'Personal Note' from the first paperback printing of 1957, and a brief introduction on the 50th Anniversary of the book at the start of the book. The book is not clearly dated, but the inclusion of the 50th Anniversary Intro would point to a mid 80's printing. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. Not a remainder, not a library discard copy. No creases to the cover or spine. Some spots of rubbing wear to the front cover and along the edges of the spine panel. Attached are some photos of the copy we have in our inventory. N° de réf. du vendeur 26-02144

Paperback. Etat : Good. This book presents a theory of film. The greater part is an adaptation of the book originally published in 1933, long out of print but still in demand because it raises fundamental questions that the intervening years have by no means answered. Arnheim's provocative thesis is that the peculiar virtues of film as art derive from an exploitation of limitations of the medium: the absence of sound, the absence of color, the lack of three-dimensional depth. Silent-film artists made virtues of these necessities and were on their way to developing a new and distinctive art form. Mechanical advancement has led to greater realism, and a corresponding loss in artistry. The four essays which make up the rest of the book are supplementary in nature. The final one discusses the general aesthetic rules for the combination of different media--word, image, and sound--and leads to an evaluation of the talking picture as a medium for artistic expression. --Adapted from back cover. Minor age tanning & foxing but good overall; 244 pages. N° de réf. du vendeur 1576706
