In 1968, future “gonzo journalist” Hunter S. Thompson predicted Bob Bone would write a book someday “on How to Beat the NY Big Salary-Death-in-Life Syndrome.”
This, at last, is that book.
Robert W. Bone has visited every continent and covered at least 75 countries. For four decades, thousands of travelers to Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand carried the latest editions of his prize-winning Maverick Guides or read his groundbreaking work on the “last frontier,” Fielding’s Alaska and the Yukon. He wrote travel articles for magazines, and using his personal syndication system, hundreds more for the travel sections of newspapers throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Thompson joined him on some of his early adventures in the U.S. and abroad, admiring Bone’s ability to live the kind of life that office drones dream of.
Put the formula down on paper, Thompson wrote him:“Shit, you’d sell 50,000 copies in NY alone.”
Fire Bone! is an unvarnished memoir of thrilling experiences with newspapers, magazines and book publishers, and the childhood and youthful love affairs that led up to them.
Bone has been shot at and robbed. He’s battled American and foreign bureaucrats. But as his grandmother predicted, everything he did “would always come out for the best.”
He’s climbed to the top of a mast at sea and planted a revolutionary flag at a world’s fair. And he’s never been fired from a job. Fire Bone! explains all that, too.
À propos de l'auteur: For nearly three-quarters of a century, travel writer Robert W. Bone has been a successful writer, author, editor, and photographer in the U.S. and abroad. He grew up in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, and began newspaper work while still in college. And as a young Army lieutenant, he edited Army training manuals and other publications. Bob Bone has been employed by the Buffalo Courier-Express, the Middletown (N.Y.) Daily Record, the San Juan (Puerto Rico) Star, the New York Post, the Honolulu Advertiser, and the London Bureau of United Press. He was also editor-in-chief of Brazilian Business magazine in Rio de Janeiro, news editor of Popular Photography magazine in New York, and a picture editor on the staff of Time-Life Books. His first free-lancing stint was at the 1958 World Fair in Brussels. He also did radio news spots for NBC News in South America and later was a stringer for Time magazine in Hawaii. In 1968, Bone began to concentrate on travel subjects when he joined the late Temple Fielding, then known as the dean of American guidebook writers. Headquartered with Fielding in Mallorca, Spain, he traveled extensively while working on the annual Fielding’s Travel Guide to Europe and other books. Bob was with Fielding when his employer was featured in a cover story in Time magazine. Bob Bone lived in Hawaii from 1971-2008. During that time he became known in the publishing world for beginning the Maverick Guide series of books. He wrote multiple editions of the Maverick guides to Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. He also wrote Fielding’s Alaska and the Yukon. His articles and photographs have appeared in many national magazines, including the National Geographic Traveler, and newspaper travel sections, including the Chicago Tribune, and the Boston Globe.. He has done web articles for USA Today, America Online, WatchBoom, and his own feature magazine TravelPieces.com. He was the first alumnus to be inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame by Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. When not traveling or visiting his long-time home in Honolulu, he lives with his wife, Sara, in Walnut Creek, California.
