Florence, by Augustus J.C. Hare.
Augustus John Cuthbert Hare (1834-1903) was one of the most widely read Victorian travel writers, known for his richly detailed guides to Italy and beyond. In Florence he offered visitors a blend of practical touring advice with history, art appreciation, and literary anecdote, enhanced by finely engraved illustrations and a colour map. First issued in the 1880s, it quickly established itself as a standard English-language guide to the city, reflecting both Hare's erudition and the fascination Florence held for late 19th-century travellers.
Published by George Allen, London, 1890. Third Edition. With printer's 'New Address' slip bound in before title page, dated to 1894.
A very good black cloth hardback in original Publisher's binding with gilt titles and red ruled decoration. Covers lightly rubbed with a slight skew to spine. Soundly bound.
Text is very good throughout - bright and clean throughout with some spotting to endpapers, and finely detailed line illustrations in text. With an attractive colour map of Florence near the front. Previous owner's name to endpaper. With red tinted text block edges, as issued. An interesting early example of this classic Victorian travel guide.
Text in English.
