SECOND ENGLISH EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED. Cloth-bound; hardcover; octavo (19.5 x 12.5 x 2.5 cm); pp. xvi, 140, [8] advertisements. English text translated from the fourth German edition by Henry L. Brose, with a preface by Albert Einstein and an introduction by H.H. Turner. Bound in publisher's original cloth; half-title; diagrams in the text; publisher's rear catalogue dated October 1923. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure. Covers well-preserved with trivial bumping to spine ends. Interior largely fresh and clean. Without previous ownership markings. Notes: Second edition in English of this early application of the general theory of relativity to astronomy. Erwin Freundlich was an associate of Albert Einstein and later became director of the Einstein Institute in Potsdam. This work, first published in German in 1916, demonstrates how the theory could be tested by observing gravitational redshift. It features two essays by Henry L. Brose and an introduction by the British astronomer Herbert Hall Turner. The first English edition, a slim 60-page pamphlet published in 1920 by Cambridge University Press, underwent significant expansion in the present second edition, effectively constituting a new book.
