. (wiki) // " This long-awaited study seeks to define and evaluate the works of Franz Kafka, by assessing the elements which compose his style. Since Kafka's impact stems preeminently from his power over words in a series of unforgettable fictional representations, many have felt that the biographical, psycho-analytical, philosophical, and religious books which have been written about Kafka fall short of a statement of his true greatness. Professor Politzer, himself a poet, writes: "Rather than stressing the timeliness of (Kafka's) vision, (the book) attempts to explore the timelessness of his imagery. Its main subject is not Kafka, the man who indulged in nightmares, even if those nightmares are pertinent today, but Kafka, the narrator who told remarkably illuminating stories while searching for a way through the shadows which connect his lifetime with ours." Written in English by a man whose native tongue is Kafka's German, the book conveys to the reader some of the feats Kafka performed in the medium of his language, his word-plays, his ironies, and the other transparencies of his style. Professor Politzer suggests that despite the horror spread by many of Kafka's stories, the reader may find "comfort" in the inevitability of his symbolic language and in the mastery of his execution of even the most frightful detail. … " (Verlagstext) // INHALT : I "Give It Up!": A Discourse on Method ---- II Juvenilia: The Artist as a Bachelor ---- III The Breakthrough: 1912 Crisis ---- "The Judgment" "The Metamorphosis" ---- IV Parable and Paradox: "A Country Doctor" and "In the Penal Colony" ---- V Der Verschollene: The Innocence of Karl Rossmann ---- Kafka with the Red Carnation ---- The Reality of Amerika ---- Der Verschollene ---- "The Stoker" ---- The Road into the Interior ---- A Sentimental Education ---- Karl's Trial ---- The Information Givers (Part One) ---- Brunelda's Opera Glasses ---- The Final Examination ---- VI The Trial against the Court ---- The law of the Law ---- Joseph K.'s Guilt ---- The Man from the Country ---- The Parable of the Doorkeeper ---- The "Pass" ---- The Public Secret ---- The Women ---- The Information Givers (Part Two) ---- The Last Shame ---- VII The Bitter Herb: The Castle ---- The Man from the Country as Land-Surveyor ---- The Arrival ---- The Labyrinth ---- Count Westwest ---- Mirrors ---- Echoes ---- Of Time and Space ---- The Information Givers (Part Three) ---- Journey's End? ---- The Messengers: Barnabas and Amalia ---- The Bitter Herb ---- VIII Heightened Redemption: Testaments and Last Stories ---- Patchwork ---- Dearest Father ---- Franz Kafka's Wills -- (u.a.)
