A propos de cet article

56 pp. Binding slightly foxed, with remnants of a library sticker, library stamp on the back of the title page, otherwise very clean. - From the Preface: My preoccupation with the problem discussed in the following study goes back for at least nine years. In an article that appeared in 1952, Angel Rosenblat points out the inadequacy of the two criteria of meaning and termination for the gender of certain words in Spanish, and then continues: Vamos a intentar una sistematización poniendo en juego un tercer criterio: el proceso formative. . . . If the meaning of the latter term can be taken to embrace the etymology of words and the origin of endings and formative suffixes, then that is the method that I already had in mind. Unfortunately Rosenblat soon stumbles rather badly, in the august company it is true, of Meyer-Lübke, or possibly through an imperfect reading of a passage in the Grammaire des langues romanes (II, p. 463). After rightly pointing out that the French suffix AGE from -ATICU is originally masculine, he then asserts that it has become feminine in image, cartilage, putrilage, etc . Besides the error of fact in the case of le cartilage and le putrilage, there is the fundamental error of principle in assuming that the terminations of the words quoted are the same as that of other words ending in AGE. - Allwyn Charles Keys (1906 - 1986, both in New Zealand), Professor of French and Romance Philology and Head of Modern Languages.
