Item description from seller

Edgewear and leather peeling , tone with foxing, wear, two owner's signatures 1850 + 1879, otherwise light wear. Solid oversize hardcover. ; Full speckled calf binding with two spine labels. This volume contains memoirs and correspondence from three prominent members of the Society of Friends, the Quakers. "Thomas Scattergood was a Quaker from Philadelphia who brought the concept of the ‘moral treatment’ of mentally ill patients to the US from The Retreat in York, England. He was instrumental in the foundation of Friends Hospital, the first mental hospital in the US to follow this model." - Quakers of the World. "George Whitehead (1636–1723) was a leading early Quaker preacher, author and lobbyist remembered for his advocacy of religious freedom before three kings of England. His lobbying in defence of the right to practise the Quaker religion was influential on the Act of Uniformity, the Bill of Rights of 1689 and the Royal Declaration of Indulgence. His writings are both biographical and ideological in nature, examining the Quaker way of life." - Wikipedia. "John Roberts (1623-1684) was a man of piety, wisdom, and remarkable wit. He was convinced of the truth through the powerful ministry of Richard Farnsworth, while the latter was a prisoner at Banbury Jail, and through heartfelt submission to the truth became a respected minister in the Society of Friends, sometimes traveling with George Fox. The combination of John Roberts’ blunt honesty, profound understanding, and humorous way of disputing with his adversaries, has long made the memoir of his life (written by his youngest son, Daniel) a favorite among early Quaker writings." ; The Friends' Library; iv, 480 pages.
