Octavo, pp. [1-8] 2-120 [121: printer's imprint] [122-124: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks], lithographs by André Hofer, original plum wrappers with printed label on front cover. First edition. This is copy number 315 of an unspecified number of trade copies printed on laid paper. Signed on first blank leaf with a warm inscription to fellow author Jules Romains, who was just becoming established as a significant author of the interwar period. Variot was a minor author associated with the region of Alsace (Ribeaupierre is an aristocratic family from that area). The first part of the present work is in the form of a play, debating questions of religion. The second concerns the stations of the cross, a Catholic devotional tradition connected with Good Friday. Printed on pulpy paper that has browned but is not especially brittle, pages unopened, with some tears along top edge of four adjacent leaves, generally very good. (#138450).
