Description :

Large octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] ix-xiv [xv-xvi] 1-150 [151-152: blank] [note: first and last leaves are blanks], illustrations, pictorial wrappers, plastic comb spine. First edition. Limited to 35 copies. Facsimile reprint of a reformist labor novel serialized in PEARSON'S WEEKLY from 29 December 1900 to 13 April 1901, not previously published in book form. The present story exploits the theme of labor unrest in the North of England. A violent mill strike is finally ended with a profit-sharing agreement brokered largely through the efforts of a female mill worker, Esther Maxwell and her family. PEARSON'S WEEKLY, a down-market story-and-tidbits paper, was, as George Locke has documented, an incubator for the kind of stories later known as science fiction. Beginning in the mid-1990s, editor/publisher John D. Squires issued a dozen or so similar booklets with tiny print runs, most of them related to M. P. Shiel (with whom Tracy collaborated on more than one occasion). The blank first leaf bears a spoof inscription from "Tracy" dated November, 1901 to a book editor who has been professionally active since the 1960s. Light stains to rear cover with mild bled through on last few leaves, else a fine copy. (#139584). N° de réf. du libraire 139584
