When six-year-old Emily Hartwell is too afraid of the dark to sleep, her mother offers a simple comfort: everyone has a guardian angel, and all you have to do is ask. Emily names hers Michael, after the archangel in her church's stained glass window, and for the first time, the shapes at the edge of her vision go still.
The comfort follows her into a childhood marked by cruelty. Emily is shy, an easy target, and when a boy at school makes her life unbearable, she does the only thing that has ever made her feel safe: she asks Michael for help. The next day, he isn't at school. He never bothers her again.
It happens again. And again. Every classmate who mocks her, every teacher who humiliates her, every rival who makes her small - each one meets an accident, an illness, a tragedy too precise to be coincidence. Emily tells herself it's protection. She tells herself it's justice. She keeps asking.
But by the time she reaches high school, the pattern has outgrown her control. People who were never cruel to her start paying the price simply for being near her. A face appears in the mirror one night - beautiful, symmetrical, and utterly wrong - and Emily begins to understand that what she invited into her life as a frightened child was never an angel at all.
With the help of a therapist who refuses to dismiss what she's seen and a priest willing to name the thing she's too afraid to name herself, Emily fights to break free from an entity that has spent a decade convincing her it was the only one who ever truly protected her. The battle costs her friendships, her sense of self, and, for one unbearable night, her innocence - before she finally confronts it directly and walks away believing she has won.
Years later, married with two children of her own, Emily has built the ordinary, peaceful life she once thought impossible. Then her seven-year-old daughter mentions a new friend who visits her at night. A friend who says his name is Michael.
My Guardian Angel is a haunting novel about the terrible cost of being believed, the fragile line between protection and possession, and how far a mother's love will go to keep her children from inheriting a war she thought she'd already won.

À propos de l’auteur
M.J. Johansen is a horror and thriller author known for fast-paced, character-driven fiction that finds the darkness hiding inside ordinary institutions - hospitals, small towns, families. Johansen's catalog spans supernatural horror, literary fiction, sci-fi, and historical adventure, including All Hallows Eve, My Guardian Angel, Unhallowed Ground, Widow's Hollow, Born a Genius, What Heaven Is Like, and The Fate of the Fancy. Doctor Death is Johansen's first foray into medical thriller territory, drawing on the real institutional chaos of the pandemic years to imagine how easily trust can be exploited when a system is stretched past its limits.
Johansen lives and writes in the United States and is currently at work on the next novel.

Description de la boutique
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
