Gender, Continuity, and the Shaping of Modernity in the Arts of East Asia, 16th20th Centuries presents a critical introduction and nine essays that examine womens and mens participation in the art world and gendered visual representations from the premodern through modern eras.

Kristen L. Chiem, Ph.D (2011), University of California, Los Angeles, is Associate Professor of Art History at Pepperdine University. She has published articles examining the intersections of gender, painting, and garden imagery in late imperial China. Lara C. W. Blanchard, Ph.D. (2001), University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is Luce Professor of East Asian Art at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She has published articles on gender and Chinese art from the Song to Ming dynasties.
