A first-hand account by a Forty-Niner. Includes Chinese Camp, the Mokelumne, Stanislaus, Murphy's, Murderer's Bar, Carson's, Mormon Gulch, the Tuolumne, Fremont Mill, Mariposa, Helvetia Quartz Mill, Grass Valley, El Rastra, Gold Bluff, Gold Hill, Table Mountain, French Corral, and the Shady Creek Canal. Illustrations include the author's camp on the Stanislaus, scenes of panning, winnowing, cradle rocking, and washing with the long tom, the river operations at Murderer's Bar, packing earth at Carson, a quicksilver machine in Mormon Gulch, a scene in Helvetia Quartz Mill at Grass Valley, Ocean Beach Mining at Gold Bluff, ground sluicing at Gold Hill, tunneling at Table Mountain, an interior view of the tunnel, hydraulic mining at French Corral, and the flume on the Shady Creek Canal.
