Item description from seller

Ghost of Shandon (2018) by Alan Corbett (On Stream) is the sort of book that sounds like it should arrive trailing fog, tapping at the window, and politely asking if you have a spare room and a healthy respect for unresolved business. It?s got that classic ghost-story promise baked right into the title: a place-name with atmosphere ( Shandon has a lovely ring of history and stonework), plus a spectral presence that suggests someone is about to learn that the past is not, in fact, past ? it?s just lurking nearby, waiting for the right moment to make a point. There?s a delicious irony to modern ghost books, too. We live in an age of smart homes, LED lighting, and people checking their doorbell cameras at 3am ? and yet the ghost story still works. Because the fear isn?t really about whether ghosts exist. It?s about what happens when a familiar place turns strange, when a quiet corner suddenly feels watched, and when you realise you?ve been treating a building like a backdrop when it?s actually the main character. Corbett leans into that mood: the kind of tale where the setting does half the haunting, and the rest is done by your own imagination sprinting ahead of you. This is a book for readers who enjoy that slow, creeping unease rather than cheap shrieks ? the pleasure of turning pages while telling yourself you?re not spooked, you?re just? paying attention . It?s for anyone who likes their mysteries tinged with chill, their local history with a shadow across it, and their supernatural with just enough plausibility to make you side-eye a dark hallway afterwards. You know the feeling: you?re reading comfortably, and then you suddenly decide you need a drink, a snack, and every light in the house on. Completely normal behaviour. Very rational. Condition: Good , which feels entirely appropriate for a ghost book. Not pristine, not delicate, but solid ? like it?s already survived a few evenings of being read ?just one more chapter? at the exact wrong time. And it?s sold by Crappy Old Books , a seller name that sounds like a joke until you realise it?s exactly the sort of place a slightly uncanny, oddly compelling title like this should come from. If a haunted paperback could choose its own retailer, it would probably pick the one with the most self-deprecating sign outside. If you?re after something atmospheric and quietly eerie ? a story that makes place feel powerful and memory feel dangerous ? Ghost of Shandon is a great pick. It?s the kind of book that doesn?t need to shout. It just waits until you?re relaxed, then gently reminds you that some doors don?t stay closed just because you?d prefer them to.
