A Gun. A Girl. A Revolution.
When an assassin's bullet strikes a legend, will raw courage be enough to save the dream?
Kerala, 1980. A brazen assassination attempt leaves a revered revolutionary—freedom fighter, celebrated writer, and moral compass of a generation—at death’s door. On the streets, student leaders form a human barricade, defying the police and bringing the home minister’s convoy to a halt. At the heart of the uprising are three inseparable friends: a charismatic youth leader, his fiercely loyal best friend, and a fearless young woman in a scarlet hijab whose tactical genius propels the protest into a revolution. As a series of political events shakes their world, dangerous secrets begin to unravel, threatening to derail the revolution and tear apart their private lives.
Praised as "a brilliant novel that interrogates accepted history and blurs the line between fact and fiction" by K. Jayakumar (2024 Kendra Sahitya Akademi Awardee), "a tour de force" by Kerala film and TV star Mallika Sukumaran, as "a remarkable achievement—ambitious in scope, meticulous in detail, and profoundly moving" by New Asian Writing. Shortlisted for the Delhi Literature Festival Jury Award and featured at the Kerala Literature Festival, The Girl in Scarlet Hijab is a stirring debut that fuses political thriller, historical fiction, forbidden love, and emotional drama.
The novel is perfect for readers who love books about untold stories of struggle for freedom, woman's fiction, women-led resistance, coming-of-age, courage under fire, forbidden romance, Indian literature, Asian literature, and historical fiction with genuine emotional depth. If you were moved by books like The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese, Independence by Chitra Divakaruni, The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, Revolution 2020 by Chetan Bhagat, All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr, or Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan, this novel will stay with you long after the last page.
Because sometimes the most powerful weapon in a revolution…is truth told with steadfast courage.
