What is the status of cancer in the African American community? Sadly, it is not good. Cancer is having a devastating effect currently on the health of people of color in the USA. The prospects for the future are not good either. Here are the alarming facts. One in two African American men will get cancer in his lifetime. For women, the number is a little bit better at one in three. For men, the top 4 cancer killers are (in order): prostate, lung, colon, and pancreas. For women, the top 4 killers are (in order): breast, lung, colon, and pancreas. Of great concern is the literal epidemic of aggressive breast cancer in younger and younger women in recent years. What is different about the African American community that deserves a separate book regarding cancer? Are African American people's cancers fundamentally different from the cancers of other groups in the USA? The answers are that while we humans are basically alike, there are some key differences attributable primarily to skin color (for example, our darker skin from our extra melanin makes it more difficult to produce vitamin D from sunlight), lifestyle factors, and numerous other cultural variations. The authors' medical experience - an African American medical doctor husband and public health nutritionist and naturopathy doctoral-candidate wife - over many years would say that African Americans are basically a genetically strong people, but face overwhelming challenges to health, particularly related to cancer. These challenges manifest themselves in cancer in disproportionate ways compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. This book offers effective Christianity-based mind-body-spirit solutions that work - whether one needs to prevent cancer or needs to overcome an established case of cancer. The authors' practical approach is the promising field of integrative oncology, which includes the best of conventional oncology and best of alternative cancer therapies. Additionally, the scientific discipline of quantum physics, and its relationship to spirituality, is discussed extensively. This is a must-read book for pastors, lay people, and healthcare practitioners working in the African American community today.
