tall8vo, 23cm, The First English edition, x,646p, photogravure frontis portrait 20 plate illustrations, index, in contemporary half crushed light brown morocco, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt borders and devices decorations in the panels, gilt title, matched marbled boards and endpapers, t.e.g., faint tideline circle on the cover, otherwise a fine copy in fine attractive binding (ds1). First published in 1920, "Goethe" was the first of the Ludwig biographies. Although a common title, the Mayne English translation is rather rare. This first English edition has a long introduction by Ludwig addressed to "Mr. Shaw" (George Bernard Shaw) and a photo gravure frontispiece portrait:"Johann Wolfgang von Goethe" entitled "The Closing Years".
