"Who but P.G. Wodehouse could have extracted high comedy from the most noble and ancient game of golf? And who else could have combined this comedy with a real appreciation of the game, drawn from personal experience? Wodehouse's brilliant but humane brand of humor is perfectly suited to these stories of love, rivalry, revenge and fulfillment on the links. While the Oldest Member sits inside the clubhouse quoting Marcus Aurelius on patience and wisdom, outside on the green the strongest human passions burn. All human life is here, from Sandy McHoots, the cocky professional, to shy Ramsden Waters, whose only consolation is golf. Even golf haters will not be able to resist stories which perfectly combine physical farce and verbal wit with a gallery of unforgettable characters." - from the rear outer jacket. "In nine of Wodehouse's ripest stories from the 1920s, the characters are united by their worship of golf. From Rodney Spelvin, the sickeningly good-looking romantic poet who comes to his senses when he discovers the game, to Rollo Podmarsh, who finishes his round even when he thinks himself fatally poisoned, and Chester Meredith who discovers eloquence on the eighteenth green, we meet the full range of humanity in fair weather and foul." - from the rear outer jacket. "One of the greatest English comic writers of our time, P.G. Wodehouse represents and antic high point in the world of farce and social satire. His characters and settings have entered our language and our mythology. Best known for the creation of two fictional worlds based on Blandings Castle and the Wooster-Jeeves duo, Wodehouse is appreciated the world over for his exceedingly clever and comically savvy send-ups of the idle rich in twentieth-century England. Overlook is proud to have embarked on a program of handsomely packaged full-cloth editions, arguably the finest editions of the master ever published." - from the inner front jacket flaps of both volumes. "P.G. Wodehouse wroter the best English comic novels of the century." - Sebastian Faulks. "Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever." - Douglas Adams. "The works of Wodehouse continue on their unique way, unmarked by the passage of time." - Kingsley Amis. "A master, a genius of inventiveness and versatility, brilliant in his use of language, more adroit than almost any novelist since Dickens at working out a complex package of plot, sub-plot, and sub-sub-plot." - Daily Telegraph. "Sublime comic genius." - Ben Elton. "Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release futue generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own. He has made a world for us to live in and delight in." - Evelyn Waugh.…
