A few small white paint spots to front board. Original decorative cloth, small patches missing near top spine. All edges gilt. Endpapers uncracked at gutters. First publication of Hardy's The Trumpet Major, set in a fictionalised version of Weymouth during the Napoleonic Wars. Serialised in the staunchly Presbyterian periodical Good Words from January to December 1880 (this edition), the novel was first published in book form in October 1880 (a Smith, Elder & Co. triple-decker). Includes 32 illustrations by the Pre-Raphaelite painter and illustrator John Collier, 5 of them full page (facing pp. 106, 258, 360, 506, 653), not reprinted in the book publication. Collier was chosen by Hardy for the work, and they worked together in a 'collaborative relationship in which novelist and illustrator spared no pains in fleshing out the period piece with accurate costumes and accessories, a concern reflected in the novel's detailed descriptions of some of the characters' apparel as well as in Collier's plates' (Allingham, 2014, 'John Collier's Pre-Raphaelite Illustrations to the Trumpet-Major', The Hardy Review, 16.2, p. 52). Hardy supplied Collier with sketches for reference, based partly on his childhood memories of parts of old military uniforms which he had been told 'were survivals of volunteer-service days' (Weber, 1940, Hardy of Wessex,115). Hardy's only historical novel in its original context, surrounded by Good Words articles on everything from 'Kangaroos' to 'Tight-Lacing and Lung Capacity'. Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. Old prize bookplate. Size: vi, 862pp; 24 x 17.5cm. N° de réf. du vendeur WW9196
