Bound in contemporary full calf with Cambridge paneling, rolls, fillets and corner fleuron devices in blind. Spine with raised bands. Board edges with rolls in gilt. Octavo, 7 3/4" x 5". Collated and complete: [24], 264 pp. Copper engraved frontispiece of William Beveridge. Woodcut chapter head- and tail-pieces and decorated initials. ABOUT THE AUTHOR William Beveridge (1637 ? 1708) was an English writer and clergyman who served as Bishop of St Asaph from 1704 until his death.On November 27, 1681 he preached a sermon on the Excellency and Usefulness of the Common Prayer. It rapidly went through four editions. In 1683 he preached another popular sermon on the anniversary of the Great Fire of London in 1666. On November 5, 1684, he was made prebendary of Canterbury in succession to Peter du Moulin. In 1687?88 he joined with Dr. Horneck and others in forming religious societies for 'reformation of manners. In 1689 he became president of Sion College. He was installed bishop of St. Asaph on July 16, 1704.In his day he was styled the great reviver and restorer of primitive piety because in his sermons and other writings, he dwelt on the Church of the early centuries. CONDITION REPORT Fair to Good. Exterior and binding: Cracked front joint but binding holding firm. Discolored, worn leather that is cracking along the spine. Leather spine label has perished. Rubbed and worn, chipping to head and foot of spine. Bumped corners. Darkened top edge, per usual. Boards a bit warped from water. Interior: FAIR. Significant water dampening and many sections with large water dampening stains. Grubby and foxed original endpapers and blanks. Former owner name in antiquarian ink on front pastedown and his initials on final page of text. Toned pages. Most of the text block with light and scattered foxing on occasion. Usual signs of handling like some creases or an occasional smudge. .…
