In these intimate and fiery letters, Antonio Gramsci captures the stark reality of what he called a "great and terrible world." Tracing his journey from early family life in Sardinia through his pivotal role in European political history, this collection reveals the human heartbeat behind the radical theorist. Here are the early sparks of the ideas that would later define his iconic Prison Notebooks, woven alongside passionate missives to his wife, Julka, and bold political dissents against Soviet party leadership. Complete with detailed historical context, biographical notes, and rare photographic material, this edition paints a heartbreaking, deeply human portrait of intellect, love, and resilience under pressure.

À propos de l’auteur
Antonio Gramsci was one of the most important theorists of class, culture, and the state since Karl Marx. His influence has penetrated beyond the left and his stature has so increased that every serious student of Marxism, political theory or modern Italian history must now read him. Imprisoned by the Fascists for much of his adult life, Gramsci wrote brilliantly on a broad range of subjects: from folklore to philosophy, popular culture to political strategy.
Derek Boothman lectures at the University of Perugia and is a lifelong scholar of Gramsci. He is the editor of the International Gramsci Journal.
