A varied and compelling archive tracing the impact on the Lesser Antilles as they were drawn into the wider conflicts of the late 18th century, including the American Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. The documents range from professional administration to personal petitions, while also covering the practicalities of day-to-day life in the early 19th-century Caribbean. The majority of the items focus on Guadeloupe and Martinique, lying at the centre of the island chain. Both territories were fiercely contested by the French and the British, and several letters in the archive see French prisoners of war petitioning to be set free from British custody. Other items reflect the logistics of empires at war, including a Guadeloupian agreement to provision the French frigate Tourterelle in 1779 and an account sheet for the frigate L'Amphion during its stay in Guadeloupe in 1783.
