A propos de cet article

First edition of this collection of four stories by American physician, neurologist, and author Silas Weir Mitchell: “The Guillotine Club,” “The Fourteenth Guest,” “The Mind-Reader,” and “The House Beyond Prettymarsh.” Illustrated with fourteen plates by André Castaigne and F. R. Gruger. The copyright page states “Published October, 1910,” identifying the first edition. Bibliographically recorded as BAL 14263. Mitchell occupied an unusual position in American intellectual life as both a prominent nineteenth-century physician and a successful literary author. Best remembered medically for his work in neurology and nerve injuries, he also produced novels, poetry, and short fiction. This collection therefore has particular appeal as a crossover title for collectors of American literature, physician-authors, and the history of medicine. 285 pages with fourteen inserted illustrated plates. Publisher’s dark green cloth elaborately stamped in gilt to the front board and spine. Condition: Very Good. Original green cloth remains attractive with bright gilt decoration and lettering. Moderate rubbing and shelf wear, particularly along the spine edges, joints, corners, and spine ends; small area of fraying at the upper spine edge. Boards show scattered light surface rubbing and handling marks. Pencil shelf or ownership numbers written on the front free endpaper. Pages show normal age toning. Binding appears firm. No dust jacket present. Please see photographs for full condition details. Significance / Collector Appeal: A handsome first edition by one of the more unusual physician-authors in American literature. The combination of Mitchell’s medical importance, four somewhat macabre and psychologically oriented stories, fourteen illustrations, and attractive gilt Arts-and-Crafts-influenced binding gives the book considerably more appeal than an ordinary early-twentieth-century story collection. Shipping / Returns: Carefully packed for shipment. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 3b. …
