Gus Hall and Communist Party USA political archive, 1960 to 1972, tracing Hall's return to public party leadership after his imprisonment, his participation in the international communist movement, and the CPUSA's 1970s program of antiwar mobilization, Black liberation, labor organization, and electoral campaigning. Hall served as the party's general secretary from 1959 until his death in 2000 and entered the 1972 election as the first of four Communist Party presidential campaigns he would conduct over the next twelve years. Hall opens with the secret Pentagon papers, denounces successive presidential administrations for the Vietnam War, calls for total American withdrawal from Indochina, and links the antiwar struggle to the campaign for Angela Davis's release and preparations for the party's twentieth national convention. Hall appears as the party's former steelworker and general secretary; Tyner, his vice presidential running mate in 1972 and 1976, appears as a former Teamster and national chairman of the Young Workers Liberation League. Hall's lead the CPUSA during a decade in which the American left was divided among antiwar, labor, and Black liberation movements in the wake of the social uprising and Red Scare of the 1960s.
